The picture is the stupa courtyard at Pamdaloka
(the lotus realm) retreat centre. The plaques around the base of the Stupa say 'Cherish the Doctrine', 'Live United', 'Radiate Love'.
At the class this week we will begin an exploration of the kinds of actions that we can develop that lead to the lotus realm / the realm of perfect action through bringing ethics clearly to the forefront of our daily lives. What do we mean by perfect action? Why bother with ethics? Are there other routes to happiness.
The Buddha taught that craving and aversion, pushing and pulling things towards and away from us may give us temporary happiness but the attachment, discontentment and fear of losing what we have only leads to further suffering or dis-ease. The Buddha comments that these drives are in one's self like the shoots which spring from the branches of a banyan tree. They are attached to sense desires like a maluva creeper which overgrows the jungle.
So, a bit of the hero / heroine is needed to move away from this cycle of craving and aversion. Hope to meet you on the road heading towards freedom!!!
